5th graders have been expanding their writing fluency through various weekly challenges. Recently we have been having fun with TAP writing which focuses on topic development, audience and purpose for writing. This week the topic was FIRST SNOW. The following are examples of student work:

Audience: Skiers Purpose: Invite to your resort
Hello, Mo Mentum here, owner of Supa Snow Ski Area. I am happy to report that we just received 27 inches of fresh powder on the slopes. In other words, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! Come on down to Supa Snow for the skiing experience of your life! And listen to this: if you buy two adult tickets, you get a child ticket FREE! Call 1-800-POWDER for details.

Audience: Birds Purpose: Complaining about just building their nests
It took 4 days to build this nest and then, by some miracle, it snowed. A lot. Like 3 feet. Many fellow neighbors were thrown out of the tree and are now sinking into the snow. At one point I had to get a hold of my nest so I didn't go air born. When the storm was over I thought, ' I quit being a robin,' and left the tree.

Audience: TV viewers Purpose: Inform them of upcoming weather
Welcome to the flakes channel! I am your reporter, Blizz Ardd. Right now, Western Massachusetts is experiencing our first snow of the season! It's about 30 degrees below zero, and the wind speeds are 36 miles per hour. So be careful, bundle up! Also, for Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, they have one to two feet of snow and the water temperatures are one degree. Just look out for plows, remember to stay at least 20 feet behind them. Also, no parking on top of snow piles. I am your reporter, Blizz Ardd, signing off. Oh no! Here comes the worst of it!!
