After completing the Iliad in the first half of the year, the 6th graders are on to the Odyssey. We are using The Wanderings of Odysseus by Rosemary Sutcliff as our text. Odysseus, known for his wit, cunning, and bravery, leads the Greeks to victory in the Trojan War. After being away from home for way longer than anyone thought, he longs to hurry home to Ithaca to see his wife and son. With this in mind, students were asked: What could possibly go wrong? We know Odysseus and we know that we can expect some interventions from the gods. Here's what Ava B. had to say:
So far, Ava has been right on track! As Odysseus battles the call of the Sirens, Calypso, the Cyclops and many perils, (check out Ava's drawing of the Scylla) he continues to rely on his cunning, strength, ethics and values to lead him home.
- The boat could sink
- He could meet enemies on the way
- The gods/goddesses could interfere
- His homeland could be gone/ abandoned
- He could run out supplies
- he could get lost
- He could get sick
